When Your Dacor Is a Samsung Underneath, and When It Is Not

Samsung Electronics America announced its acquisition of Dacor on 10 August 2016 and closed it the following month, and Dacor has operated since as Samsung's ultra-premium appliance subsidiary. It kept its name, its product line and its own site, and it is still sold as a distinct luxury brand. What genuinely changed is underneath: the code family, the control boards and the part-number formats moved to the parent's platform. That is a service fact rather than a marketing one, and it has a measurable consequence — eight dishwasher error codes are exact string matches between the two brands. What it does not mean is that a Dacor is a relabelled Samsung. The cabinets, the finishes, the burner designs and the built-in formats are Dacor's, and anybody telling you the two are the same appliance is oversimplifying in a way that will not help when something breaks.

The full guide

This question gets asked defensively and it deserves a straight answer.

Cooking and ventilation, and no refrigeration at all This make builds ranges, wall and steam ovens, cooktops and rangetops, ventilation, microwaves and warming drawers, a coffee system and outdoor grills. It builds no refrigerators, freezers, wine storage, ice makers or undercounter refrigeration. The model number on the plate inside the appliance settles which is which. A KITCHEN IS SPECIFIED AS A SET. IT IS NOT BUILT BY ONE COMPANY. BUILT BY THIS MAKE Ranges — dual fuel, gas, induction Wall ovens and steam ovens Cooktops, rangetops, counter modules Ventilation, wall to downdraft Microwaves and warming drawers A coffee system, outdoor grills NOT BUILT BY THIS MAKE Refrigerators Freezers Wine storage Ice makers Undercounter refrigeration — none of it, in any line The model number is on a plate inside the appliance, and it names the maker unambiguously.
The empty column is the answer. Matching handles across a run are a design decision, not a manufacturer.

Is Dacor made by Samsung? The facts, in order

Dacor was founded in 1965 in Pasadena by Stanley M. Joseph, and the name is short for Distinctive Appliances, Incorporated. It stayed family-run for three generations, and it manufactured at a plant in City of Industry, California, where US production continued until 2021.

Samsung Electronics America announced the acquisition on 10 August 2016 and closed it the following month for a reported $150 million. Samsung said at the time that Dacor would keep its corporate identity and brand.

It has. Dacor sells its own line, under its own name, on its own site.

What actually changed underneath

The electronics. A Dacor built before September 2016 runs Dacor's own control boards and reports F-codes; one built after runs the Samsung platform and reports C-## strings on ovens and ranges and letter pairs ending in C on dishwashers.

The clearest evidence is in the dishwashers: 4C and 5C are exact matches to the parent company's own published dishwasher codes, and LC plays the same role as the parent's leak code. The internal document naming on the current dishwasher manual uses a Samsung part-number format.

That is a fact about the platform. It is useful precisely because it tells a technician which parts are correct.

What did not change

The cabinet formats. Panel-ready columns at 24, 30 and 36 inches. French doors built to take cabinet fronts. Sealed brass rangetop burners with a simmer-to-sear range. Hood liners built to disappear into joinery. A hundred-bottle wine column holding three zones to about a third of a degree.

None of that is a badge exercise, and none of it is shared.

Why we mention the parent at all

Because it is the honest answer to a service question, exactly as Whirlpool is the honest answer on a Kenmore site. What we will not do is use it as filler, claim a shared part number that is not in the documentation, or tell you your appliance is something it is not.

The part that matters when something breaks

Not the ownership. The date. An appliance from 2014 and one from 2019 can share a cabinet shape and share nothing else — different code table, different board, different part number — and the model plate is what tells them apart.

What this means for parts, practically

We order against the model number, never against the family. The platform being shared is why some part-number formats look familiar and why ordinary components on the current generation are stocked rather than ordered — but a part is correct because your model calls for it, and a supplier working from a family resemblance will happily send something that nearly fits.

On the legacy machines the question is different and simpler: those parts are Dacor's own, some are still made and some are not, and the answer is established before labor is booked rather than discovered afterwards.

If it turns out to be a repair

Every job on this site is priced the same way: an on-site diagnostic first, the figure agreed in writing before anybody starts.

Which Era Is My Dacor? The 2016 Line That Changes Everything

Dacor built its own control boards until September 2016 and has run the Samsung platform since. The two generations share no error code, no board and no part number — so the model number matters more here than on any other make.

    Legacy control diagnosis

The service that exists because this badge changed hands in 2016. Appliances made before that run Dacor's own boards and report F-codes — F0 to F8 on a Classic ERC oven, F1 to F95 on an ER-series range, F-1 to F-9 on an EDW or IDW dishwasher — and none of those strings exist on the current platform. A technician who only knows the current machines will read them wrongly or not at all, which is why owners of these appliances are so often told their machine is unfixable. It usually is not. What it needs is the right table and an honest answer about parts.

    • Pre-2016 codes share nothing with the current platform
    • F1, F2 and F3 mean different things on a Classic ERC oven and an ER range

Questions people ask about this

Can Samsung parts be used on a Dacor?

Sometimes on the current generation and never as an assumption. The platform is shared, which is why some part-number formats look familiar, but a part is correct because the model calls for it rather than because the platforms are related. We order against the model, not against the family.

Does this make a Dacor worse?

No, and the practical effect is arguably the opposite: the current generation has a broad parts channel behind it, which is why ordinary components are stocked rather than ordered. The trade-off is on the older machines, where some Dacor-specific boards are no longer made.

Where is Dacor made now?

We do not state that, because it is not verifiable from anything we have read. US manufacturing in California ran until 2021; what happened after that has not been published clearly enough for us to put on a page, and a confident answer here would be a guess.

Two Degrees Is a Problem on a Dacor Wine Column

The cabinet is specified to hold within about a third of a degree, so a drift most refrigerators would shrug off is a genuine failure here. How many zones are wrong is the question that decides the repair.

Why Five Dacor Appliances Show No Error Code At All

The refrigeration, the freezer columns, the wine column, the hoods and the microwaves publish no error codes in either era. Sites that list them anyway are quoting strings the manufacturer's own manual contradicts.
