Frost inside a frost-free cabinet means moisture is getting in, or the defrost cycle is no longer clearing what condenses. Both are ordinary, and which one it is can usually be told by where the ice forms: around the door and at the top means air is leaking in, while ice at the back wall and under the drawers means the defrost is not finishing. In a column the ice starts low and surfaces late, so by the time it is visible it has been building for weeks.

The door is letting warm air in
A gasket that has lost contact, a hinge that has settled under a panel front, or a drawer left proud. Warm humid air meets a cold cabinet and the result is exactly this.

Heater, sensor, thermostat or the control that times them. Ice accumulates on the evaporator until air can no longer cross it, and the cabinet slowly loses its ability to hold temperature.

What to do in the next ten minutes
Look at where the ice actually is — around the gasket, at the back wall, or under the drawers. Run a slip of paper round the door seal and feel for even drag. Check nothing is holding the door a fraction open, including a drawer not fully closed or a packet caught at the edge. Note how long since the cabinet was last emptied and defrosted, if ever.
Frost-free does not mean frost-proof
These cabinets stay clear by running a defrost cycle that melts what condenses and draining it away. Every part of that — heater, sensor, timer, drain — can fail, and each produces ice in a slightly different place. The location of the frost is the most useful thing an owner can tell us.
Humidity here does the rest
A door opened twenty times a day in an eighty per cent kitchen admits a great deal of moisture, and a marginal gasket that would pass in a dry climate will frost a cabinet here within a month. The seal is worth more attention on this coast than the manufacturer's interval assumes.

Should I defrost it manually?
It will clear the symptom for a few weeks and it will not fix the cause. If you need the space, do it — but the same ice will return on the same schedule until the problem is found.
Is the food still safe?
Frost on packaging is cosmetic. Food that has softened and refrozen is a different matter, and the giveaway is ice crystals inside the packet rather than on it.
