Symptom

Dacor microwave runs but does not heat

This is the one symptom on a microwave where we ask people to stop using the appliance until it has been seen. A machine that lights, turns and counts down while producing no heat has a problem on its high-voltage side, and that is not a part of an appliance to investigate with a screwdriver and a video: the capacitor in it can hold a lethal charge long after the plug is out. It is a routine repair for somebody equipped for it. There is no code to read — this make's microwaves display a single generic word and nothing more specific.

Three ordinary causes

What this usually turns out to be

Cheapest and commonest first, which is also the order we check them in. They sit hundreds of dollars apart, and only the unit settles which one is yours.

  • The high-voltage side has failed

Magnetron, capacitor, diode or transformer. The machine behaves completely normally because everything except the heating is still working, which is exactly why it is so often described as 'suddenly useless'.

  • A door interlock is not being satisfied

Three switches have to agree before the machine will heat. A door that has dropped on its hinges fails them in a particular order, and the result is a microwave that runs and does not cook.

  • The drawer mechanism is not fully closed

On a drawer machine the interlock chain includes the drawer's own position. A drawer that stops a few millimeters short leaves an appliance that appears to work and will not heat.

Before you call anybody

None of it needs tools, and all of it makes the visit shorter.

  1. 01

    Do not open it up

The one genuinely dangerous appliance in this kitchen once the case is off.

  2. 02

    Listen to the running noise

Normal, louder, or quieter than usual. It points at the high-voltage side or away from it.

  3. 03

Check whether the door or drawer closes fully

An interlock problem is the good version of this complaint and the cheaper repair.

How it shows up

What people describe when they call

  • “Stop using it. The high-voltage side is not a do-it-yourself repair”
  • “There is no code table for this appliance in either era — just the word ERROR”
  • “Built-in and drawer machines are worth repairing; a countertop one usually is not”

A shortcut

Narrow it down before anybody arrives

A description of the behaviour leaves a few possible causes. A code names the subsystem before anybody opens anything, which is why it is worth photographing before it clears.

About Dacor microwave runs but does not heat

What to do in the next ten minutes

Stop using the microwave and unplug it if the plug is reachable. Do not remove any panel: the capacitor holds a charge after the power is off. Note whether the machine makes its usual running noise, a louder hum, or is unusually quiet — that difference is genuinely useful to us. If the appliance is a drawer or an over-range unit, note the model from the frame.

Why this one gets a warning and the others do not

Most appliance repairs go wrong by costing money. This one can go wrong by hurting somebody. The capacitor in a microwave holds a charge after the appliance is unplugged, and it does not discharge on its own in any useful timescale. Everything else on this site we are happy to explain in enough detail for an owner to try. Not this.

Which machines are worth repairing

A drawer microwave or an over-range unit is fitted, matched and expensive to replace, and the repairs are ordinary. A countertop machine out of warranty usually is not worth a service call, and we will say so. That costs us the visit and it is the reason the advice on the built-in machines can be trusted.

Questions about Dacor microwave runs but does not heat

Is it dangerous to have left it running?

No. A microwave that is not heating is not leaking — the two failures are unrelated. The advice to stop is about not making the problem worse and not tempting anybody to open it.

Can you tell me what the ERROR on the display means?

Not precisely, because the appliance does not say. This make's microwave manual uses one generic word for several unrelated conditions and publishes no code table. Any site offering a Dacor microwave F-code has copied it from the wall-oven list.
