- “Half the cabinet working is evidence, and it halves the diagnosis”
- “French door: one system, so this is airflow. Columns: two systems, so it is local”
- “Ice building at the back wall points at defrost rather than at the fan”
Symptom
Dacor one side cold, the other warm
The most diagnostic complaint on refrigeration, because half the appliance is telling you it is healthy. On a French-door cabinet one sealed system serves both compartments and air is moved between them, so one warm side almost always means the air path — a fan, a damper, a duct, a defrost cycle that has stopped finishing. On a column pair it means something quite different: two cabinets with a system each, and one of them has a problem the other does not share. Establishing which shape is in the kitchen is the first question and it changes everything after it.

Three ordinary causes
What this usually turns out to be
Cheapest and commonest first, which is also the order we check them in. They sit hundreds of dollars apart, and only the unit settles which one is yours.
-
The fan has slowed or stopped
Air is moved from the cold side to the warm one on the French-door cabinets. When that stops, one compartment keeps its temperature and the other drifts, with the compressor working perfectly throughout.

Ice has closed the air path
A defrost cycle that no longer completes lets the evaporator pack with ice until air cannot cross it. The early sign is a two-degree drift; the late sign is visible frost and a fan that sounds like it is scraping.

One column has a problem of its own
On a paired installation the two cabinets are independent. A warm refrigerator column beside a cold freezer column is a problem inside one machine, and the other is simply proof that the kitchen, the supply and the room are all fine.

None of it needs tools, and all of it makes the visit shorter.

01
Which compartment, and by how many degrees
A two-degree drift and a ten-degree one are different problems on the same cabinet.

02
Look for ice at the back wall
Frost where air should be moving is the defrost answer, and it is visible without tools.

Confirm the other cabinet is genuinely right
On a column pair the healthy cabinet is the most useful measurement in the kitchen.

Narrow it down before anybody arrives
A description of the behaviour leaves a few possible causes. A code names the subsystem before anybody opens anything, which is why it is worth photographing before it clears.
If there is no code at all

What to do in the next ten minutes
Note which compartment is wrong and by how much, using a thermometer rather than the display. Look at the rear wall inside the warm compartment for ice or for anything stacked against the vents. If this is a column pair, confirm that the other column really is holding its temperature. Do not switch the cabinet off — a system that has been running is easier to read than one that has been rested.
Why this is the good version of the complaint
An appliance that has failed completely tells you very little. One that is half working tells you where to look: the compressor is running, the supply is fine, the room is fine, and the problem is between the cold that is being made and the compartment that is not getting it. On a make that publishes no codes, that is the closest thing to a diagnostic readout you get.
The shape of the installation decides the answer
Two shapes are sold here and they fail differently. A French door with one system and shared air is an airflow diagnosis. A pair of columns with a system each is a local one. Owners reasonably describe both as 'the fridge', and the first thing we establish on the telephone is which of them is standing in the kitchen.

Questions about Dacor one side cold, the other warm
Can I just turn it off and on again?
It rarely helps and it costs you the evidence. A cabinet that has been running steadily can be measured; one that has been switched off and restarted is recovering, and recovering looks like working for several hours.
The app says everything is fine.
The app reports named alarms rather than measurements, and a two-degree drift is well inside what it will call normal. That is why we ask for a thermometer reading rather than a screenshot.
