# Dacor hood runs but the kitchen does not clear

### What to do in the next ten minutes

Take the filters out and hold them up to a light. Run the hood at full speed with the filters removed and see whether extraction improves — that single test separates filters from everything beyond them. Hold a sheet of paper to the intake at full speed and see whether it holds. If the hood is recirculating rather than ducted, find out when the charcoal filter was last changed.

### Where we look, in order

Filters, then the wheel, then the duct. That order is not about cost — it is about likelihood, and it happens to run from free to expensive. A hood that moves air at the intake and does not clear the room has a problem past the appliance, and pretending otherwise sells a blower that changes nothing.

### Buildings here are part of the diagnosis

A long shared riser, a damper at the outside wall, a neighbor’s run tied into the same duct. None of that appears in an appliance manual and all of it decides whether a kitchen clears. We check the hood and then we check what it is connected to.

The filters are loaded

Baffle and mesh filters fill with grease evenly and silently. The loss of performance is slow enough that the kitchen adjusts to it, and the difference after cleaning surprises people.

The blower wheel is coated

Grease collects unevenly on the wheel, which unbalances it and costs airflow before it ever makes a noise. Cleaning the wheel restores more performance than replacing the motor would.

The duct or the damper is the problem

A run that has separated above the ceiling, a damper stuck shut, or a recirculating hood whose charcoal filter is years old. The appliance is blameless in all three and we say so.

Hold the filters up to the light

If light does not pass through the mesh, air is not passing either.

Run it once with the filters out

Not a way to cook, but a decisive five-second test of where the restriction is.

Find out whether it is ducted or recirculating

Half of the disappointing hoods in condominiums are recirculating and nobody told the owner.

The fan sounds normal and the smoke stays

What it usually means

Filters first — they block slowly enough that nobody notices

Then the duct: long shared runs are ordinary in buildings here

A healthy fan pushing into a blocked run sounds completely normal

### Would a more powerful hood fix it?

Almost never. A bigger fan pushing into a restricted duct moves marginally more air and makes considerably more noise. Clearing the restriction is what changes the kitchen.

### How often should the filters be cleaned?

In a kitchen that cooks most nights, monthly. Baffles go in the dishwasher; mesh filters prefer hot water and a degreaser. It is the highest-value maintenance in the room.
