### Grease before parts, nearly every time

Noise that has grown gradually is a blower wheel carrying an uneven layer of grease: it goes out of balance and hums or rattles at particular speeds. Weak extraction is filters, then the wheel, then the duct. A wheel cleaned properly is quieter than a new motor fitted over old grease, and that is the usual outcome of this visit. What is not grease is a bearing, a mount that has loosened, or a duct that has come apart above the ceiling — and in buildings here the duct is a commoner answer than people expect.

What this involves

Gradual noise is grease and balance; sudden noise is a bearing or a mount

Weak extraction starts at the filters and often ends at the duct

Long shared duct runs are ordinary here and are part of the diagnosis

Run it through every speed

Noise that appears at one speed and not another is imbalance; noise at all speeds is mechanical.

Clean the wheel and housing properly

Removed and washed, not wiped in place. A balanced wheel is quieter than a new one fitted over old grease.

Check airflow at the hood and at the outlet

If the hood is moving air and the kitchen is not clearing, the answer is beyond the appliance and we say so.

### The fan sounds fine but the kitchen does not clear.

Then the restriction is past the appliance. Filters first, then the duct and its damper. A healthy blower pushing into a blocked run sounds completely normal.

### Would a more powerful hood help?

Almost never. A bigger fan against a restricted duct moves marginally more air and makes considerably more noise.
