### Protection looks exactly like failure

A zone that runs for five minutes at high power and then steps back is usually defending itself against heat it cannot shed — a cabinet packed tight underneath, insulation added in a renovation, a drawer stacked to the top. That is not a problem in the appliance, and establishing it before anybody quotes for parts is most of the value of this visit. Where it is genuinely electronic, each zone has its own coil and drive, so one dead zone rarely means the surface is finished.

Coil, driver, sensing and the connections between. Then, and only then, the glass and the touch panel above it.

### The cooktop will not recognize my pan.

Induction needs a magnetic base, and a fridge magnet is the whole test. If it does not stick, no repair will change that. A pan that used to work and now does not is a different matter.

### Does a cracked surface have to be replaced?

Yes, and quickly. The glass is part of the appliance's insulation and its seal against spills, and a crack lets liquid reach the electronics underneath.
