Caps and heads come off, get washed, and go back a fraction out of position or still damp. The burner then clicks without lighting, or lights and goes out, and the appliance gets the blame. In this climate the other ordinary cause is salt air on the igniter, which cracks a body that still looks perfect and sparks to the wrong place. The professional burners complicate it pleasantly: they relight themselves after a draft or a boil-over, so repeated flame-outs may be that system rather than the burner.

Reseat and inspect every cap and head

Ports clear, caps seated flat, heads on their locating pins. This alone resolves a good share of these visits.

Test the ignition path

Igniter, its lead, the switch and the earth. A cracked igniter body reads fine and sparks to the wrong place.

Set the flame and prove the simmer

Both ends of the range matter: a burner that sears and cannot simmer is only half working.

### Is it safe to keep trying to light it?

Stop if you can smell gas, turn the knob fully off and give it a few minutes. Otherwise a match is a reasonable short-term measure and also confirms the burner is fine and the ignition is not.

### One burner or all of them — does it matter?

It is most of the diagnosis. Trouble at one position stays with that burner. Trouble that moves around the hob points at the earth, the switch bank or the supply.
