It is also something to maintain: the chamber needs the right salt, the setting has to match the water actually arriving, and the resin does not last forever. The clearest sign it needs attention is a machine whose performance has declined slowly and evenly — everything slightly worse, nothing actually broken.

Check the setting against the water

### How do I know what setting it should be on?

Measured against the water that arrives rather than assumed. A softener set for water softer than what comes out of the tap does a fraction of its job, and that is the commonest finding.

### Does it need special salt?

Dishwasher salt specifically — not table salt, which contains anti-caking agents that damage the resin. It is inexpensive and the appliance uses very little of it.
