### Four parts, one system, and an early symptom worth catching

A heater, a sensor, a thermostat and the control that times them. When the cycle stops finishing, ice builds on the evaporator until air cannot cross it — and the first sign is not visible ice at all, it is a compartment two degrees off where it should be. In a column that accumulation starts low and surfaces weeks later, which is why owners describe it as having happened overnight. Three measurements separate the four parts; replacing the set is quicker and costs money the measurements save.

Look behind the back wall

Ice on the evaporator tells you the defrost is not running; a clean coil with a warm compartment tells you it is running too much. The two look identical from the front.

Test the parts rather than replace the set

Heater continuity, sensor resistance against temperature, the thermostat's actual switching point. Three measurements decide which part it is.

Clear the drain while it is open

A defrost that works and a drain that is blocked produces water in the base and ice under the drawers. It is five minutes with the panel already off.

### Will defrosting it manually fix it?

It clears the symptom for a few weeks and leaves the cause. If the ice returns on a schedule, the cycle is not completing and that is a repair rather than a habit.

### Is the food safe meanwhile?

Frost on packaging is cosmetic. Food that has softened and refrozen is a different matter, and the giveaway is ice crystals inside the packet rather than on it.
