# A Dacor Microwave Drawer That Will Not Open Is Not a Dead Oven

Two appliances share a shell here, and only one of them is usually broken.

## Dacor microwave drawer not opening: what a drawer microwave actually is

An oven cavity mounted in a motorized drawer, running on rails, opening downward at the touch of a button. In a kitchen where nobody wants to reach across a hot range it is the best microwave format there is — and it has moving parts that a countertop machine does not.

Those parts move several times a day for years. Wear shows first as binding on the return stroke, then as a drawer that stops short, and finally as one that will not move.

## Why the oven refuses to work

The interlock chain has to be satisfied before a microwave will heat, and on this appliance the drawer's position is part of it. A drawer that will not close fully leaves an oven that will not run, and the two are one problem rather than two.

Once the mechanism is right, the oven is almost always found to have been fine throughout — which is worth knowing before anybody starts pricing a replacement.

## The cheapest outcome, checked first

Things fall into the runner. A skewer, a jar lid, a coin, a chopstick. Food debris hardens into a ridge along the track and behaves exactly like a failed drive.

A torch along both rails takes thirty seconds and resolves a genuine share of these calls at no cost at all.

## Rails or drive

Work the drawer by hand with the power off. If it binds only when it is loaded, the rails are carrying weight they no longer carry well. If it binds empty too, the drive or an obstruction is the answer.

That single observation decides what goes on the van, and on an appliance fitted under a stone worktop with a tight surround, having the right part matters — the access can take longer than the repair.

## The thing that turns a small repair into a large one

Forcing it. A stuck drawer pushed hard strips the drive, and the drive is the expensive half. If it will not move, stop and note the model number instead.

## How it is fitted changes the visit

A drawer microwave under a stone worktop with a tight surround takes longer to remove than the repair itself takes, and that access is the larger half of the figure. On a straightforward cabinet installation it is a short visit.

So the useful thing to tell us when booking is not just the model but what is around it: whether there is a drawer or a cabinet beneath, whether the worktop overhangs, and whether the appliance sits in a run of joinery or in a standalone cabinet. It decides whether one person or two arrive.
